Waymo to launch driverless taxi service in Arizona

Waymo, an affiliated company of Alphabet, launches driverless taxi service based on its autonomous Chrysler Pacifica vehicles, which will operate in Phoenix, Arizona.

Last year, the company provided free taxi rides to ordinary people who live near the suburbs of Phoenix, in Chandler. Until recently, the modified unmanned minivans of the company had a Waymo employee on board, who could stop the car in case of emergency.

However, Waymo CEO John Krafcik said the company is ready to transport passengers without a driver at all. A video showing the car driving with no one in the driver’s seat is available on the official YouTube channel of the company.

A great advantage of Phoenix are good weather conditions. It's sunny, warm almost every day, rarely rains and snows in Arizona. This is why the city is the best for Waymo car testing.

There will be no steering wheel in Chrysler Pacifica vehicles, and each passenger seat will be equipped with a special tablet to control the settings of the system.

There is a panel with four buttons on the ceiling, so the user can contact support center, unlock and lock the doors, start or stop the car.
